Calhoun County’s commitment to economic growth was spotlighted this week as the Alabama Department of Commerce made a special visit to the area to present the Calhoun County Economic Development Council (EDC) with a check for $858,000. This funding, originally awarded in February, supports industrial site development through Alabama’s innovative Site Evaluation and Economic Development Strategy (SEEDS) program.
During the presentation, EDC board members, staff, and representatives from the Department of Commerce stood together in recognition of this milestone achievement. Board members expressed their gratitude and optimism for the impact of the SEEDS grant opportunity.
Larry Deason, Chairman of the EDC, spoke about the significance of the moment: “This reflects our areas shared vision for economic growth. It’s exciting to see the efforts of our local leaders and state partners materialize into something that will benefit everyone.”
This funding, a component of Governor Kay Ivey’s "Game Plan" economic development initiative, was approved by the State Legislature to address Alabama’s increasing need for high-quality industrial sites. The SEEDS program positions Alabama to remain competitive as other states enhance their industrial development efforts.
“Through innovative programs like SEEDS, Alabama is ensuring that every community has the tools and resources to compete for the high-quality jobs of the future,” Governor Kay Ivey said. “This investment in Calhoun County reflects our commitment to empowering local leaders and creating opportunities that strengthen both our workforce and our economy. I’m proud of the collaboration between state and local partners that makes projects like this possible.”
“This SEEDS grant highlights our commitment to helping Alabama communities create the infrastructure and opportunities needed to attract transformative projects,” said Ellen McNair, Secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce. “The investment in Calhoun County not only demonstrates our dedication to supporting local development efforts but also strengthens the region’s ability to compete on a global scale for jobs and investments.”
Don Hopper, the Executive Director of the EDC mentioned that the grant supported the acquisition of more than 150 acres of additional property near the Oxford West Industrial Park. The strategic purchase enabled a reinvestment of savings into the site’s development, setting the stage for future industrial attraction and high-demand jobs.
Mayor Alton Craft of Oxford shared “the EDC continues to do a good job working together with all our municipalities to promote economic growth in our area. This SEEDS grant allows for site development that ultimately will bring new industry and create more jobs for our community.”
The SEEDS program represents a significant investment in Alabama’s industrial infrastructure, allocating $40 million in total funding. To date, $30.1 million has been awarded, matched by $38.4 million in local funds, to support development across 29 industrial sites encompassing nearly 8,400 acres.
